How to localize 01. Localization strategy:     Through market research and consultation with you, we assist you in developing the best product localization strategy for your business.

When introducing a new product, or entering a new market segment, you will carefully study that market to develop the best entry strategy for new or existing products. We strongly recommend that you take the same care in localizing your products, as we consider this a very important step before attempting to penetrate the Japanese market. Our localization service enables you to modify, add and/or delete functionality of your program to develop the best suitable design for the target market, thereby generating maximum sales. We will actively participate in and support your efforts by providing our expertise in assessing technical compatibility as well as our experience with the Japanese business environment and market characteristics.

02. Technical modification of your product:     Based on that localization strategy, your product may need modification.

The tasks necessary to modify your program to suit the Japanese market environment may include:

  • 1. internationalization, called I18N, to make your program "locale independent source code" compliant for easy localization (L10N), and

  • 2. addition/change of functionality embedded in your program.
  • These modification tasks may be performed by either you or us. In case we take care of the task, it will be necessary that you disclose your source code to us under a non-disclosure agreement and/or other legal papers to protect your copyright(s). We can accept programs written in major languages such as VB, C/C++ and Java.

03. Dictionary:    Creating a good and reliable dictionary for use in translation work is key to producing high-quality Japanese versions of your products.

Our experienced in-house translators and engineers will create a dictionary for exclusively your product, in consultation with you, before any translation work begins. The completed dictionary is always referred to in all translation works, using a special dictionary tool to ensure that the specified terminology is consistently applied.

04. Modification and translation of resource files (User Interface):    The User Interface is a face of your software products and must be friendly to Japanese users in terms of displaying message, accepting input from the users and other characteristics specific to Japanese sensibilities and market environments.

Based on the localization strategy we develop with you, your source/resource and related files are modified and translated. You do not have to disclose the source code if we perform the translation works only in resource files and you complete the compilation to generate an EXE file. However, be aware that the compilation phase often requires a series of trials and tests with updated/modified resource files, just as it did at the development stage of the original program. We have the experience and expertise to fix any technical difficulties, including character-set problems, that may often occur during the localization process.

05. Documentation:    All documents included in and with the product must be translated to Japanese and suitable for use by the Japanese users.

Creating good documentation for your products is an essential part to keep their overall quality. We are capable of handling the documentation process, including the markup languages such as HTML, SGML, XML.

06. Online help:    It is strongly recommended to translate the Online help to Japanese because users rely daily on the help feature.

The online help feature must be convenient and easy to use. We localize the original English online help system by translating the topic files (and other related files) and compiling them, or generating the help files from the document source files (single source). Localization of the online help function is not difficult, but requires special depth of knowledge and experience with online help systems due to embedded programming codes needed to construct a help system. Translation work without knowing the help system may generate compilation errors. We can also accept the single source method using a tool to automatically generate HTML files from the same data source as the documents. This approach significantly saves cost and time avoiding translation and compilation works repeated for the online help. Our online help team consists of translators and software engineers with sufficient experience to localize the online help function and its compilation, including hyper-graphics, and the HTML help system.

07. Technical writing:    If any function is modified or added in the Japanese version, the corresponding documentation and online help materials must be also modified or added.

If new features are added or modified for the Japanese version, all documents and online help must be modified accordingly. Our experienced technical writers can write the best suitable texts for the documentation through operating the actual products.

08. Re-use of translated resources:    Software products are often updated. We may store all translated resources into our database, which enables you to save significant time and costs in localizing new versions.

Another cost-effective service we can provide is our unique in-house database system which enables us to reuse translated materials. This system stores all translated resources in a database while translating. The stored resources can be easily retrieved online when a new translation is made, which provides you with remarkable savings of time and money when localizing a new version borrowing much of its language from previous versions. Since we can re-use the stored materials, you avoid paying a translation company twice for translating the same material.
